Movie nights are our favorite kind of nights but with school back in session, it's all about finding the right time that doesn't intervene with bedtime hours. Which usually means a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night. When I saw that Tall Girl was finally streaming on Netflix I knew we'd have to have a family movie night right away, when would right away be? Well. Saurday night of course, first thing was making sure we were stocked up on yummy treats for our movie night and guests. It's still a little bit hot and fruit is always refreshing, so fruit skewers would be the perfect treat to serve, aside from popcorn that is.
Never judge a book by it's cover, or in others words embrace each others uniqueness. We are all different whether it's personality or look wise. In the case of Jodi from Tall Girl, we are reminded how important it is to feel comfortable in your own skin and to stand tall. That's where the fruit skewer idea came in. Just look at our fruits standing tall. Valentina loved eating the fruit while watching the movie with us and being reminded how important it is to be nice to each other.
Fruit Skewer Recipe:
For our fuirt skewers I wanted to make sure that it had some of Valentinas favorite fruits and fruits that everyone would enjoy as well.
1lb of Red Grapes
1 Small Package of Blueberries
1lb of Green Grapes
1 Pineapple or 2 cans of sliced pineapple
6 Tangerines
1 small package of strawberries
1 Pack of skewer sticks (we bought ours at michaels)
Wash all of the fruit that will be used and bring out those cutting boards. For the grapes there is no need to cut them, the skewer will go right through the middle.
Valentina loves rainbows, so a rainbow inspired skewer it would be and that's why we started with the grapes in the bottom. You can pick whichever fruit you'd like first. All of our fruits were fresh including the pineapple, therefor we made sure to have a big tray where we put aside the fruit that wasn't used for the fruit skewer and it oewuld be set out for family to eat on it's own.
We lined up our skewers and a beautiful rainbow appeared.
It was now time for movie night.
One quick note regarding the skewers. The top part is pointy and can be dangerous, make sure to tell kids not to run with skewers or to becareful when eating from them, to avoid accidents.
Jodi (Ava Michelle) has always been the tallest girl in school — and she's always been uncomfortable with it. After slouching her way through life for 16 years and being made fun of by classmates, Jodi meets Stig (Luke Eisner), a seemingly perfect Swedish foreign exchange student who's even taller than she is. Jodi's new crush turns her world upside down and throws her into a surprising love triangle, but with the help of her two best friends (Griffin Gluck, Anjelika Washington) as well as her beauty queen sister Harper (Sabrina Carpenter), Jodi comes to realize that she's far more than her insecurities about her appearance have led her to believe. TALL GIRL, director Nzingha Stewart’s first feature film, is a heartfelt and hilarious coming-of-age story about finding the confidence to stop slouching and stand tall.

Tall Girl reminded me how special it is to always have those people who have your back through thick and thin, and always see how beautiful you are even when you don't see it yourself. It also reminded me that everyone is always battling with something that they are not happy with, me for example it can be fighting with my own self esteem regarding my weight, but my loved ones always remind me just how beautiful I am with my curves. Especially my little one, who always says "Mami, you look so beautiful".
Last night's movie night was also an eye opener for Valentina, a reminder of why being nice to others is so important and how we need to embrace ourselves and love who we are, because we are all unique and beautiful.
Tall Girl is now streaming on Netflix, so grab a bowl of popcorn or some fruit and make sure to watch it.
